One of the wettest cities in the country
Beaumont sits on the Texas coastal plain about 30 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico, and the area gets more than 65 inches of rain a year, the most in the state. Most of it falls in a wet season from April to October. All that water tests drain and sewer lines, and heavy storms can push sewage back toward the house. See sewer backup prevention.
A river city since 1838
Beaumont became a town on December 16, 1838, on land bordered by the Neches River to the east and Pine Island Bayou to the north. It grew on lumber, rice farming and its port, then boomed after the Spindletop gusher in 1901. With 115,282 people at the 2020 census, it has homes from almost every era, and older neighborhoods can have cast iron drains that crack with age. Our heavy rain guide explains the warning signs.
