Plumber in Nederland

Nederland at a glance

Nederland is a city in Jefferson County with 18,856 people at the 2020 census. It was settled in 1897 along what became Boston Avenue and incorporated in 1940, and it sits next to Jack Brooks Regional Airport in the Golden Triangle.

What that means for your plumbing

A city that grew mostly after incorporation has many homes from the 1940s onward. Houses from those decades may still have cast iron drain lines and galvanized supply pipe that wear from the inside. Slow drains or rusty water are the usual first signs; see drain cleaning.

Flat coastal ground

The flat coastal land that drew Nederland's settlers also means water has nowhere quick to go in a heavy storm. Sewer lines can take in groundwater through cracked joints when the soil is saturated. If drains slow down mainly during wet weather, mention it to the plumber.

A Dutch town on the railroad

Nederland was founded in 1897 by Dutch settlers on land sold by the Kansas City Southern Railway, whose line still runs through the center of the city. The name means "lowland", and families such as the Rienstras, Doornboses and Van Oostroms have descendants here today. Tradition says the flat terrain reminded them of home, though the heat surely did not. The early economy ran on rice and dairy farming. Homes built across more than a century in a low-lying town share one weak spot: the sewer line. If yours is original, a camera inspection shows its condition before a storm finds it for you. See sewer backup prevention.
