Vidor is a city in western Orange County with 9,789 people at the 2020 census. It lies at Interstate 10 and Farm to Market Road 105, about 6 miles northeast of Beaumont, and covers about 12 square miles.

A lumber town

The area was heavily logged after the railway arrived. The city is named for lumberman Charles Shelton Vidor, owner of the Miller-Vidor Lumber Company and father of film director King Vidor. By 1909 the community had a post office, a company tram road followed in 1913, and almost everyone worked for the mill until it moved north to Lakeview in 1924 in search of virgin timber. A small settlement stayed, the Miller-Vidor subdivision was laid out in 1929, and Vidor incorporated in 1960. Today Vidor Independent School District is the largest of six in the county.
