Grigsby's Bluff

Port Neches grew on Grigsby's Bluff, one of only two high bluffs on the Neches River south of Beaumont. For at least 1,500 years before 1780, part of the bluff was a Native American town, first of the Karankawa. The river's name is thought to come from the Caddo word "Nachawi", meaning "wood of the bow". Higher ground was precious in a land of marsh and bayou, and it still matters.
